Residency for Ukrainian women artists

Application Deadline was on 30 September 2024

General information

The Martin Roth-Initiative starts a new project which aims to empower women artists in Ukraine. Through a residency with online workshops, discussions and expert meetings, an offline meet up in Germany, and a joint publication, the project promotes collaboration, intellectual search and dialogue, feminist discourse and artistic exploration.

Residency

The Martin Roth-Initiative invites 20 feminist women artists from Ukraine to a residency to reflect on what it means to be a woman artist in Ukraine today. Participants will explore how their art has changed after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, what makes the voice of a female artist sound louder or quieter and what it can offer during the war.

  • Intellectual inspiration and exchange: lectures, workshops, and discussions to deepen artistic search and feminist discourse
  • Space for reflection, mutual support and empowerment: on- and offline meetings will invite to share thoughts and experiences, jointly look for answers to challenging questions, and develop new ideas for further artistic practice
  • Artists are invited to document their thoughts and observations; the final publication of the project will be an opportunity to share them publicly and by that contribute to the development of Ukrainian artistic and feminist discourses.
  • Artists will receive a residency stipend for the participation including funding support for materials

This residency combines online and offline parts. It offers space for thinking, articulating, interacting, and recharging. During the programme, artists will engage in discussions and peer-to-peer exchange, jointly exploring challenging questions and shaping the final publication.
Please note: working languages of the programme are Ukrainian and English.

  • 9 events from 17 October 2024 to 24 January 2025
  • Lectures and workshops on feminist art theory, discussions on in/ability to speak about the war and political nature of art as an archive of experiences, as well as workshops on self-realisation and empowerment
  • A 6-day lasting in person meet-up in Germany in February or March 2025 (details will be announced later) as a space for personal interaction and collaboration
  • Expenses for travel and accommodation are covered by the project. Childcare support for participants with children will be organised during the whole offline part.

The Martin Roth-Initiative was created as a joint project of ifa and Goethe-Institut. Both institutions have been implementing various projects with Ukraine and its cultural scene (you can learn more about on the websites).
Since its establishment, the MRI's mission has been to support artists at risk who promote the values of democracy in their art and who because of that face restrictions on their freedom in their countries of origin or residence. In collaboration with the partners, the Martin Roth-Initiative has decided to empower Ukrainian artists through a separate project, and it resulted into this residency.
